RAMBLE

Download the document Renoir was a tireless worker, when he wasn’t painting he used to travel around the local countryside in search of inspiration to Verpilleres, Essoyes to the Crechot hill (also known as the Hill of the Biques) and to Servigny on the road to Loches. Servigny was a magical place for Renoir. There he would repeat Watteau’s name to himself and hum tunes by Mozart. He would also take pleasure in painting the local river, the Ource, under the Loches bridge. The places he preferred to paint were where the river ran over pebbles.

Les Cadoles

The ‘Cadoles de Champagne’ are ancient dry-stone huts very typical of the Cote des Bar region (Bar sur Seine and Bar sur Aube). They were constructed by grape-growers as protection against bad weather in winter but also against the heat of summer. Built out of stone taken from the vineyards, they were used as shelters in which to have a snack during the work of the day.

Charitable organisations now look after these ruins which are pleasing to the eye of those who walk in the area. In other wine regions they are known as ‘loge’, ‘borie’, ‘capitelle’, ‘mesure’ or ‘cahute’.
